Laying drainage: How much does it cost?

Laying drainage costs an average of 23 euros per meter

Installing drainage costs between 12 and 34 euros per meter.

Drainage refers to the professional removal of excess water from the soil. For homeowners, drainage around the basement area is particularly important, as it helps prevent damage caused by external moisture entering the structure.

What factors can influence the price?

The following factors can affect the cost of installing drainage:

  • Type of basement construction

  • Number and size of pipes

  • Possible complications during the work

  • Labor costs

How can I save money when installing drainage?

You can save money by doing some of the drainage work yourself. For example, rent a mini excavator instead of paying the often high rental fees for contractor equipment.

Make sure you know which tasks you can safely handle on your own. Complex excavation work should always be left to professionals. Have an expert inspect any work you do yourself to ensure no mistakes were made.

How much does drainage cost?

For professional drainage installation, you should rely on experts. They will help you keep water away from your basement walls in the long term and avoid costly mistakes.

To direct water to a suitable location, experts first perform an infiltration test, which costs between 1 and 7 euros per meter. Then they plan the drainage route, dig a trench, and line it with filter fabric. These preliminary tasks cost 60 to 130 euros.

Laying the pipes costs around 8 to 21 euros per linear meter. At each corner of the house, pipes must be connected with T-pieces costing 9 to 30 euros each. Inspection chambers are also installed, starting at 108 euros each, allowing later inspection and cleaning of the system.

Finally, the drainage system is connected to the existing sewer line. This connection, including the fitting pipe, costs between 23 and 122 euros.

Once all pipes are in place, the trench is filled with gravel and covered with a layer of filter fabric.

Cost overview for drainage installation

Service / Material Cost
Excavating trench 25–46 €/m³
Pipe 8–21 €/m
T-piece 9–30 €/unit
Inspection chamber 108–421 €/unit
Connection pipe 23–122 €/unit
Infiltration test 1–7 €/m

What travel costs should I expect?

If the job site is outside the contractor’s regular service area, many tradespeople charge a travel fee. Depending on the region, this can range from 10 to 50 euros.
