Chimney Renovation: What Does It Cost?

The renovation of a chimney costs an average of €1,385.
In most cases, a chimney renovation costs between €800 and €1,970.

If cracks appear on the chimney, mortar starts crumbling, or the draft is no longer sufficient, it’s time to have the structure inspected. Even when installing a new heating system, the chimney may need to be repaired or modernized.

The total renovation cost is made up of several components:

  • Chimney liner

  • Chimney cap

  • Installation and labor costs

In some cases, a complete renovation may be necessary, depending on the condition of the existing structure.

How Much Do Labor Costs Amount To?

The installation of a new chimney or liner is usually done by a stove builder.
They can refurbish the existing brick chimney and insert a stainless steel flue pipe.

If you wish to continue using the brick version, a full chimney renovation might be required. The cost depends on the complexity and scope of work.

  • Installing a stainless steel chimney: €200 – €600 in labor costs

  • Complete chimney renovation: €500 – €1,000

In addition to labor, you should expect delivery and travel expenses between €20 and €60.

How Much Do Materials Cost?

The type of stainless steel pipe significantly affects the renovation cost.

  • Single-walled, uninsulated liners are suitable if there’s already a brick chimney; the pipe is simply inserted into the existing shaft.

  • Double-walled, insulated liners are used when a new flue system is required — for example, in homes without an existing chimney or during new construction where a brick chimney is impractical.

Material Type Cost per meter
Single-walled stainless steel chimney €60 – €90
Double-walled stainless steel chimney €70 – €170

A chimney cap, which prevents rainwater or animals from entering, costs €20 – €180, depending on the model.

Installing a stainless steel liner is also recommended if you plan to operate a single-room fireplace such as a wood stove.

In all cases, it’s advisable to schedule an on-site inspection with both the stove builder and chimney sweep to determine the best approach.

Example Calculation: Chimney Renovation

Below is an example cost breakdown for renovating a 1.2-meter-high chimney:

Item Cost (€)
Single-walled stainless steel chimney 84
